Coimbatore Contributes its share in a big way to the Indian economy through its industrial hub in the areas of Textile, Pump Motor, Foundry, Textile Engineering, Educational Medical and IT related areas.

The first Electric Motor and Water Lifting Pump in India were produced in Coimbatore seven decades back. Coimbatore produces more than 45% of the Nation's pump motor requirement used for Agriculture, Industrial and Domestic needs.

The year 1952 saw the birth of SIEMA initiated by the Stalwarts of Coimbatore Engineering Industries with a vision and a mission to uphold the interest and tradition of the Industries. The Southern India Engineering Manufacturer's Association (SIEMA) was incorporated on 29th October 1952 with a humble strength of 20 members and Late Prof.G.R.Damodaran of PSG Industrial Institutes as the Founder President.

In 1976 SIEMA purchased 41.5 cents of land in the prestigious location of Coimbatore , RACE COURSE . An Office building of 7000 Sq.ft was constructed in June 1984.In the year 1996
another 4000 Sq.ft building was added in the first floor.

In the quota Regime of late 50's SIEMA engaged in procuring scarce raw materials like Coke, Pig Iron, Steel Materials and foundry chemical for distribution to its members.

SIEMA represented to the Government and its agencies for the raw material requirements, tax related matters and industrial relations and had a very good rapport with all the Departments.

SIEMA used to have regular interaction with its members for fixation of prices for their products.

The 15th Indian Standards Convention was held in Coimbatore during December 1973 and that was the beginning of Standards Marking for Coimbatore Pump Industry.
